In the sport of soccer normally the players can play the ball around in any desired direction all over the pitch however they cannot receive the ball in offside position. What is an offside position? The Law of the Game of Soccer states that offside position is when one of the teammates is touching or playing the ball, the other members cannot get actively involved with the ball at that moment. An offside position is also when the player is close to the goal line of the opponent when the 2nd to last defender is already present there and has the soccer ball in close proximity.
When one of the players is actively playing the ball and the other player interferes it is considered a offside offense. It is the referee who decides if a offside offense has been committed or not. Also if a goal is scored when consulting an offside offense the referee has the right to nullify the goal. The other offside term in soccer is the offside sanction. In the offside sanction the opponents get a indirect free kick from the same position that the player who was offside positioned touched the ball that was also touched or played by another teammate.
